The locally advanced cancer of my prostate into the bladder mouth, will need radiation which will affect the urethra. Will this treatment cause urine retention due to probable damage of the urethra at the exit triangle?
I have experience of urine retention from previous bladder problems (very unpleasant), and would like to know if there is a way of preventing scarring due to radiation.
I had urine retention from week 3 of a four week RT treatment in early 2019. I was prescribed Tamsulosin which fixed it almost immediately. I stayed on Tamsulosin for about two months after RT finished and then, after taking advice from my GP, gradually reduced the dose over the next two months.
It's worth asking your Oncologist about SpaceOar which is hydrogel inserted in the space between the prostate and the bladder. It wasn't available on the NHS when I had my RT but I believe it's a lot more common now.
