Is this to be expected?

My husband had his catheter removed last Monday ( 11 days ago) after his prostatectomy the previous week. His bladder control was surprisingly excellent from the word go and he had a week without needing to wear any pads at all, both day and night. Then 7 days later sudden urgency to urinate returned, and he's needed to wear protection for unexpected leaks or dribbles.

We just wanted to know if this was normal and to be expected as he gains his full bladder control again. It can seem a step back after such a positive first week, and wondered if anyone else had encountered something similar on their journey of recovery.

Many thanks

  • Jewel Mai,

I'd take it as normal,if you look positively at it, it shows that your husband's bladder control is still working well.

I would have been more concerned if he'd been unable to control it from the start.

I was on Hormones and Radiotherapy treatment.  After the Radiation treatment I was dribbling and wanted to go all the time but when I did, only a trickle came out.

It took a few months to get back to normal (if you can call it normal).  I wore pads basically all day (mostly for reassure), and put pads down in bed just incase.

It was nearly 4 months before I could stand up and Pee.

Just be there for your husband and reassure him.  It really does help.

Best of luck to you both.

  • Hi,

What I forgot to do was to welcome you both to this forum.

It's the place to come to share your problems and experiences.

There's always someone else who has been through the exact same thing.

I found that the more I could talk about it, the easier it was to manage my situation.

We all have the same thing in common.
