Cold cap

Finally got to try this today. However I was a failure! It needs to go on half hour before treatment starts then all the way through treatment with 20 mins at the end... I lasted about 10 minutes and asked for it to be taken off. It was extremely cold and gave me a serious head ache. If you can handle I would do it. There is no evidence this prevents your hair falling out, another reason for stopping it when I did.

If you are keen for your hair not to fall out it's a chance to take but too much for me. Apologies I couldn't give it more of a chance but there it is! If your hard as nails, unlike me then give it a try.

  • Hi

When my wife had chemo she did not even get as far as you as the idea of turning up early and then having to stay on at the end for a chance of not losing her hair did not appeal - so well done for giving it a try because at least you know.

Mind you for Janice she had previously done a charity head shave to help raise money for a specialist wheel chair for a local girl so she knew it was not to bad.

With her first chemo she did loose her hair, when it started to come back it started with a natural curl that she quite liked but then it returned to straight again. The second type of chemo she had did not really affect her hair at all.

    <<hugs>>

  • Cold cap is very cold it's like a lump of ice gets stuck on your head! Thanks for your reply.

  • I have done 2 scalp cooling now.  The timing issue isn't a problem for me as the first 45 minutes they do all the pre meds etc and the 60 minutes afterwards I have 30 minites of caliopatixel (non hair losing chemo drug).

Yes the 1st 15 minutes can be painfully but I take 2 paracetamol before and then concentrate on doing a word search/read a book.  After this time your body adjusts and it is manageable.

  • Your braver than me I lasted about 10 minutes before I asked to take it off. I had it before when I first had chemo and it was fine I must be getting soft with old age.
