Proton Beam Radiation

Hello all. 68 years, Stage 1 (or 2), Gleason 3+4. I've been told brachytherapy or surgery. Neither sounds appealing.

I'm wondering about EBRT or Proton Beam Radiation. I've seen a lot of men here mention EBRT+Hormone therapy. But Proton Beam Radiation is completely new to me. I'm going to start researching it.

I wonder if anyone has had any experience with that or would like to share some thoughts? Thank you in advance.

  • Wow, sounds like something from a Sci-fi movie from the 1970's.

This is the  high intensity radiation therapy isn't it?

Dee, just been checking online and only a few places in the UK offer this.

Take a look on the Macmillan website, they have a detailed piece on it.

Please let us know how it goes.

  • Dee, seriously though, there is an intensive Radiotherapy here now.  It's for 1 week without Hormones.  There are certain criteria to meet for that option.

I don't know if this has the Proton Beam.

    Does anyone know?

  • Hi Tat

About 3 years ago they were talking about 2 Proton centres at UCL in London and Christie  in Manchester.  I presume that they are up and running now so could be worth looking at, possibly even more centres offering it now

  • Hi Tatami53

There is a proton beam not long opened at Christie’s Withington Manchester, it was mainly used for brain tumours, they may well have opened it to others, it’s a marvelous machine that concentrates a thin beam at the prostate, much better than the larger brother, which can affect organs as it’s a wide spread beam. I remember asking about it over six years ago, sadly it was not built then. I would certainly go for this treatment.

    Stay safe

  • Dee,

I agree with Joe, if you get the chance, go for it.

  • Steve, thank you. It's hard for me to keep track of all these conversations, and I've just clued into bookmarking the thread, so, hopefully now I can find these spots more quickly.

As I mentioned elsewhere (but should have mentioned here), I live in Tokyo, Japan. I don't even know if they offer the proton beam here, but I will research it.

But I would like to find that detailed piece on this site, so I will research it. Thank you.

  • Steve, again, thank you. I appreciate the response. Yes, intensive radiotherapy w/o hormones sounds MUCH better to me. The idea that I should grow breasts, that my testicles will shrink and that I will get more belly fat does not sound like a solution, although, I guess, those attributes are "reversible." I will research the intensive radiotherapy. Thank you a lot.

  • Grundo, hi. I appreciate all your responses. I neglected to put in my post that I'm living in Japan, so despite my great love for Britain and London, I'll have to find solutions here. (Visited London several times when I was younger. On my short list of best experiences in my life.) Thank you again.

  • Joeven, thank you for your response. I unfortunately forgot to add that I'm living in Japan. But as you describe this machine, it does sound excellent and I'm not sure why it has not been suggested or offered to me. I'm going to do further research. Thank you kindly.

  • Dee,

They told me that the side effects could be "grow breasts, that my testicles will shrink and that I will get more belly fat".

How right they were (only small breasts anyway).  I don't regret that decision for a minute.  If it works, and it looks like it has...job done!

There could be different side effects of the intensive Radiation.  I was told that you are only able to have one full session (1 week) of it.  Too much for your body to take otherwise.

This Proton Beam could be different, let us know what your findings are.
