Hot flushes

Hi all my husband had prostate cancer which has spread to his bones. He has completed chemo which has brought his PSA level down to 5.

However the only treatment left is hormone therapy and this is causing extreme hot flushes, seriously like up to 20 a day and this brink on sweats which are unbearable, literally the sweats as it physically pours off him, like dripping to the floor from his face.  This leaves him then with soaking wet clothes. When the flush stops he is then freezing and shivering.

He is struggling with sleep and sleeps on towels etc.  Does anyone have any advice? As this is seriously affecting his life x

  • Hi misses sorry to see you on this site but welcome anyway, being on hormone treatment hot flashes are quite normal, especially for men who have just started on them.

I purchased an upright cooling fan which helped me, I've also had a course of acupuncture, which also helped reduce the amount of flushes I have.

I'm 18 month's into my treatment and have 2 to 3 per week, but remember we are all different and react differently to the treatment.

  • I’m really sorry to hear about this. It must be horrible for your husband and difficult for you. I’ve been on hormone treatment for around two years and have hot flushes, but fortunately they aren’t too excessive or too frequent for me.

My big issue is the fatigue that comes with hormone treatment. In fact I’ve recently come off it to give me a break from the fatigue over the summer. Who knows what that will do to my PSA level.

The only practical advice I can offer is to phone Prostate Cancer Uk and ask to speak to one of their specialist nurses. They are great and have loads of experience in this area.

  • Hi . Ask your GP for either Cyproterone or Provera, but be aware that the former can cause a rise in HbA1c blood sugar levels which might push him into type 2 diabetes. I took two Evening Primrose Oil capsules and two Sage Leaf capsules twice a day which really helped. You can get them from Holland & Barret. If those stopped working I had a backup (plan "C"!) of Homeopathic treatment of Sepia (cuttlefish ink) which I would use maybe every 4 to 6 weeks.

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery and today is a gift.
