HDR Brachytherapy

OH is on HT and due to start R/T for 12 weeks in October but oncologist cancelled due it being to risky as OH had operation fir bowel cancer in Feb. Following consultations at UCH London and another hospital. The general consensus is that he should have HDR brachytherapy. His diagnoses was 4:4 Gleeson but now upgraded to 4:5. Anyone had HDR brachytherapy

    HDR brachytherapy is often given in conjunction with external beam Radiation.

    Works better if stats are not too high. U don't say what PSA is

    Hopefully someone will post who has been thru HDR but don't think  its used as much as LDR brachytherapy or external beam

    My husband has just had brachytherapy with boost. 

    He chose this treatment with 24 fractions of radiotherapy to follow.

    The beauty of brachytherapy is the high dose to a pinpointed area. The treatment is delivered accurately and the radiotherapy mops up any external areas. He is also on hormone injections.

  • Thanks for your reply. OH is unable to have RT due to the bowel operation- so not sure what treatment will be considered for the cancerous cells in two lymph nodes near bowel. Oncologist thinks long term HT at mo

  • I have gad HDR brachy, allied with wide field rafiation and hormones. All has been well for 8 years but PSA increases are now evident.
