Tuesday 5th October, had my first VMAT Radiation session.  Had to be there 1hour early for my Enema.

When driving to the hospital I asked my partner if she wanted to turn around and go back home, I was starting to panic a bit.

Got to the hospital, booked in at reception, there was a 45 minute delay on Room 3 (my appointed room).  So we waited.  Someone called my name after 1/2 hour or so.

We were introduced to one of the Radiographers.  She explained how things would go.

Do the Enema now and 30 minutes before my start time, drink 2 cups of water.  Had to ensure that my bowels had emptied first.

Luckily the Enema worked after about 10 minutes.  It was like a stick of dynamite, no after effects, just "Bang!".

Drank the water, waited to be called in.

I honestly don't know what I had been worrying about.  This big machine circled my stomach 360 degrees twice.  It was like being in a Star Wars film.

Then.....that was it....all finished.

So 1 down,. 19 to go.

I have good times for the rest, all at 3pm.

So, if there is anyone else ready for their first VMAT session, don't worry, I know I shouldn't have

  • Great that you got over your fears and went through with the treatment. The first view of the machine is a bit intimidating. Today it will be "Two down eighteen to go"  and so on for the next three and a bit weeks.

It will go very quickly, but do remember to tell the radiographers if you have any problems at all as they will have seen them before and will know what to do.

If I can't beat this, I'm going for the draw.

Meanwhile, my priority is to live while I have the option.

  • Exactly Seamus,

After today, 2 down 18 to go.

Don't know what I was panicking about.

  • That'll do nicely.

    VMAT… 2 Down 18 to go.

Got there in plenty of time.  Went to reception…."Room 3" - 1 hour delay.

    That's a good start... not!

Took my Enema at 2pm.  Only took just under 10 minutes to work.  Still like a stick of dynamite (one Bang! and that's it!...long may it continue).

I was told not to drink any water until someone called me to say it was time.

At  3:05pm someone said I could drink my 2 glasses of water.  I thought I would be going in at 3:30.

At about 3:45 I was finally called in.  By this time I was bursting for the loo.  Luckily I held it together until it was finished.

At least I knew what to expect.  The hard table, which had set my back off from yesterday's session, the cold in the room and cold air conditioning blowing all over the place.

But, I won't complain (no, no, not me).

The second time was better than the first.

The countdown continues...2 Down 18 to go.

  • Hi Steve

I’ve got 20 to look forward too maybe end of year, I was nervous about the procedure so it’s great to hear it’s not to bad and I love Star Wars Grin.

all the best for the remaining 18 .

  • ... and you'll be able to tell people that you have three tattoos, but you can only show them two!

  • Seamus, you'll have to explain that one to me.

  • VMAT 3 Down 17 to go.

Daft as a Brush picked me up at 13:20, got to the Freeman Hospital at about 13:40.

Booked in, Room 3 is actually on time today.

Well,it said 'On Time'.  Appointment was for 15:00.  I drank all of my water at 14:35 like I am supposed to.  It wasn't until 15:36 when I went in.  I was bursting.  Luckily I held it in.

The skin around my pelvic area was irritated from yesterday's session.  I asked one of the Radiographers.  She got me a tube of 'Flamigel'.  Told to only use this and not to itch no matter how itchy it gets.

Anyway, 3 Down 17 to go.

  • Steve,

Did you not get three tattoo dots? I got one on each hip and the third right in the groin. I'm happy to show two of them to anyone. I leave you to guess which two!
