Hi all,

Just started Abiraterone alongside the Prostap (HT) injections.  I had a fairly large spike in blood pressure which necessitated a trip or two to the GP until we got things more or less under control. Blood Pressure is still high though.

Has anyone else had this side effect from Abiraterone?  Trying to work out if this is connected or a coincidence.

Cheers

  • Hi Old seadog

I have been on Abiraterone for about a year and also found that my blood pressure went through the roof although I have had high blood pressure for the last 20 years or so!

HBP is a recognized side effect of this drug and I think this is stated on the instruction sheet. The good thing is that you don't normally get any side effects from BP tablets which is fortunate as I am now on 3!!

    Best wishes,

    Thanks Andy,

Like you, I had an existing HBP issue which was being controlled by drugs.  Wasn’t sure if the spike in BP was unconnected or directly attributable to the Abiraterone.  Your feedback helps narrow it down a little.

    cheers

  • Hi Old Seadog,

I am also on Prostap 3 monthly injections along side Abiraterone for just over a year. Like Andy100 says there is definitely a side effect of high blood pressure. Never had it at all before starting the medication but now I'm on 2 tablets a day to control it, my consultant likes to have a recent HBP test when she phones me every 3 months for a catch up.

    Take care,  Tom.

  • Hi I am on this with Prednisolone and monthly degarelix injections, so far my blood pressure  is still ok but I have only been on it 1 month.

Hi Keith, thanks for that.  Worth keeping an eye on it, especially if you have an existing BP problem. Mine is now under control again, but for a time it looked like I might have to step away from the Abiraterone altogether.

  • Hi Old Seadog

I had blood tests and blood pressure checked prior to starting and fortnightly checks since so fingers crossed it will work.

    Cheers

Unfortunately Abiraterone stopped working for my father after 3 months psa doubled in two weeks so never got to seeing BP rise but he was warned it could be a side effect

hes still on HT 3 monthly injections and abiraterone whilst he waits to find out if tomorrow and Monday PET scans say he’s suitable for a new treatment  - psma 17 as hes too old for chemo. Still trying to fins someone whose had this treatment
