Yesterday my dad got diagnosed with prostate cancer. He has been prescribed zoladex injections to shrink the cancer. Bone scan showed some anomolies and now waiting for CT scan. Does this mean the cancer has spread or is that why the CT scan is needed?

Have no other info re grade, Gleason score etc.

  • Hi CP, sorry to hear about your dad.

It's difficult to speculate without more info but it is possible that it has spread ref the bone scan

I presume. that he had a MRI scan originally?

It would be good to find out what details that gave, also Psa and Gleeson will tell a lot, see if it's possible to get hold of that info.

    Best wishes

  • Anomalies don't have to mean cancer just anomalies they want to check on with another scan that will show exactly what they are.  If you could get more information on the PSA, Gleason and T numbers when he gets them that would help us to help you.

  • It's quite routine to do soft tissue scans as well as bone scans to see whether there has been spread. Anomalies certainly could be metastases, but may turn out to be nothing. The thorough search for spread is important, first because it's the metastases, generally, that cause the trouble, but also because their presence would change the treatment options.

It's frustrating - we've all been there! - but you have to wait until all the tests have been done - then the results are discussed at a multidisciplinary meeting (which includes the imaging people and lab folk), which will then see what the options are.

The whole thing usually takes a few weeks. Good Luck.

If I can't beat this, I'm going for the draw.

Meanwhile, my priority is to live while I have the option.

  • Hi

Never good news to hear a loved one has PC, it’s usually standard practice, to have a scan, especially if they think something else is going on. It’s always best to know, then they can give the appropriate medication.
whatever the outcome, he will be in good hands, they’ve treated many people like your dad, so keep positive and keep us informed of how things are going, it’s good to chat to people who have had the same, they can tell you what is expected.

    Keep safe

No MRI scan to date. Routine blood test showed high PSA levels. Bone scan 3 weeks ago. Appointment with consultant was yesterday - bloods taken (results awaited) CT appointment awaited. Dad is not giving much away - I have asked him about grade, Gleason score etc but he says he hasn’t been given this info.

The usual sequence normally starts with PSA, then MRI scan, Biopsy, Bone scan (if needed as indicated by previous tests).

If possible perhaps consider going to the next appointment with your dad and get hold of as much info as you can.

That will help u get the best advice on this site.
