Hi Jimmy, so sorry you’re going through the a similar journey, for me I had a catheter for three weeks so definitely no dog walking. I imagine that somewhere around six weeks if not earlier you’ll be able to increase activity, you will be limited for as long as the catheter is in place, after that each man is different, I hope your ride is smooth and you can start the new year afresh
Hi - i am 59 very fit I used to run and cycle most days pre op - i had the robot 10 days ago i was up and down the ward with in 4 hours been home 8 days and walking now up to 1 and 2 hours a day ! - i started off with 30 minuets walks no blood in catheter bag so added more each day -if you get blood in the bag you are doing too much !
Hi Jimmy
I had radical robotic prostatectomy two weeks ago.
Thanks to modern pain management, I have not been in pain at all but I have been sore and uncomfortable.
I think they say up to six weeks after the op to generally feel "normal", and two weeks down the line, I would say that must be about right - I certainly don't feel all cylinders firing...I'm up and about around the house but taking things easy. I've been for short walks but think I overdid the first one and have been much easier on myself since then. And no heavy lifting at all - time for someone else to put the bins out!
I think the worst thing after the op was the catheter. I have never had one before - I found the first three days very uncomfortable but got used to it. Still, having it taken out was a good day!
So good luck and if you have any more questions, ask away.
Hi jimmymcc63,
i had a radical prostatectomy a year ago at age 64, Before that I was not particularly active but I was going to the gym two or three times a week. After my operation I couldn't walk more than a few yards at first, then slowly over time I regained some strength. By six weeks I could manage a 15-20 minute walk outside. Due to the coronavirus situation, I haven't been back to the gym, but I can manage 40-60 minutes walking per day.
I hope that doesn't sound discouraging, some people manage things more quickly than I did. (some people have already replied with much faster recovery stories than mine.) I had to have additional treatment after my surgery, six months hormone therapy and six weeks of radiotherapy, which may have slowed down my recovery somewhat. it does depend on what the state of your cancer is and what exactly the operation removes.
best of luck for your operation, check in here afterwards and let us know how you're getting on.
