Hi, following my Peritonei Cancer diagnosis I will have to attend Basingstoke Hospital for my operation,  I will be attending from Belfast and my wife will be coming also. I was just wondering if there is accommodation on site for my wife.

Many thanks

  • Hi

I'm afraid that I don't have any knowledge of whether Basingstoke Hospital has accommodation available for your wife while you are having surgery there, but I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet.

If you haven't already, could I suggest that you give the hospital a call as they'll be best placed to tell you about any accommodation they have and, if they don't have accommodation for patient's families, they can probably let you know of hotels, B & Bs, etc around and about that do.

  • Hi, apparently there is accommodation on site. This is probably too late an answer for you though

  • Hi there, sorry for the late reply but only just joined the forums.

My wife had Hipec at Basingstoke for her Pseudomixoma peritoneal in 2019, and the team on C ward were amazingly helpful as they arranged a little room in the accommodation blocks just to the back of the hospital for use throughout my wife's 3 week admission.

I hope you were able to get something sorted, and my best wishes for your recovery.

    Cheers

  • Hi, just wondering if you got accommodation on the hospital campus? We are heading over next month for my mums operation from Co Derry to Basingstoke. Thanks

  • Hi, yes there is accommodation.  Initially they booked my husband into a hotel and they then moved him to the hospital accommodation.  Hope this helps and good luck to your mum

  • Yes my wife and Mum stayed at the accommodation at Basingstoke while I was getting the operation,  your mum will be in good hands,  I can't praise all the staff enough,  good luck to your mum

  • Thank you for your reply. Did you have to travel from N.I too? She is going to be under Dr Brendan Moran. She had a CT scan on 8th August. We were told by her hospital consultant here in Derry that B’stoke are looking to operate mid/end September. Can you remember how many weeks before your operation you travelled to B’stoke for the consultation? We will be flying and have been told that she will be in hospital for two weeks. I’m wondering will she be fit to fly after the two weeks? She had a hysterectomy years ago so them parts are already out. She also had a right hemicolectomy at the start of June. Also what are the chances we could get offered two rooms for relatives to stay due to how far from home we are. Im sorry for all the questions, we’re trying to do alot of homework before having to go over.

  • Thank you for your reply, did your wife and mum get two rooms offered? I’m trying to speak to someone who has had to travel from N.I for sll of this as we are trying to do as much homework now as we can.

  • Hi Belle2016

Yes, we travelled from Belfast. I’m not sure if you will have a consultation over there before as your team here will have sent all your info, scans etc over.

We flew over on a Monday, admitted on Tuesday and surgery on Wednesday. I was supposed to be in for  3 weeks but got home just after 2 weeks.

Flying will be no problem. We found using Southampton airport much much easier than Heathrow, so I’d advise using there.

we used a taxi firm called Mick’s cabs, their number is 07780 000970 and they were great.

I texted them the details etc… and they picked us up.

Make sure to bring a dress to wear home.  Anything with a waistband is too uncomfortable.  Also you won’t wear clothes the whole time you are there, for some reason I brought loads.   I ended up wearing soft bras and disposable pull up pants. I had a temperature so couldn’t cope with pyjamas plus I hated anything touching my wound and I was very slow getting to the loo.

I feel I dealt with the physical really well but the medication gave me awful hallucinations about a week after the surgery. I wasn’t aware this could happen and it was very frightening. Maybe tell your mum this so she might realise that’s what they are.

I hope this helps. Please ask away any questions you have.

  • Yes I have been referred to the Peritoneal Malignancy Institute as I have it too and they do have free accommodation for one relative - ask them for the Accommodation for Relatives leaflet and it has free parking too
