Hi,
My Dad has been diagnosed with penile cancer. He has a tumour. Only diagnosed officially last week but still in the investigative stages. MRI booked for a couple of weeks time to decide what surgery he has done. We’re taking it one step at a time. The big issue at the moment is his pain. He’s been told paracetamol (can’t take ibuprofen) but it’s not making a difference. Hes wearing loose shorts and a cold compress to try and make him more comfortable but it’s making minimal difference. He’s going to call the hospital team tomorrow. My fear is they’re going to tell him they can’t help him. Does anyone have any experience of this? He shouldn’t have to sit at home and suffer in pain. I know they don’t like giving opioids due to addiction issues but this would be a fairly short term option (hopefully!) until he has the surgery which they believe will be mid August. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
Hi Dibdab2024 and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.
I'm sorry to read that your dad is in a lot of pain and I hope his hospital team have sorted something out for him after he spoke to them yesterday.
I'm not a member of this forum but noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list again.
I've just been diagnosed and joined the forum. My consultant has given me Instillagel which acts as a short term local anaesthetic and antiseptic while I wait for surgery. Supposedly paracetamol has to be taken consistently... I.e. every 4 hours. To be effective.
Hope that helps
Hi dibdab, it’s been a while since you posted and this is my first post, so hopefully it’ll be of some use. I’ve been using codeine and paracetamol. Whilst codeine is an opiate and some restrictions surrounding prescribing make it a last resort the concern arises around ‘free opiates’ and essentially people becoming ‘stoned’ on it. Please excuse the vernacular but It simplifies the explanation. However, given the level of discomfort and pain experienced this is unlikely to be the case, assuming additionally that your dad is or has had surgery imminently his use will or would only be short term, therefore mitigating the risk of addiction (I’ve posted anyway as it may help others with the same issues) Your dad needs to contact the gp and simply ask for the aforementioned to be prescribed, most GP’s will be supportive. If still needed he should note some decrease in pain after about 30 minutes.
All the best
Thank you for replying. Sorry to hear of your diagnosis. Wishing everything goes well with your recovery x
Thank you for replying. He was diagnosed tramadol in the end. Which helped but didn’t cure. He had a full penectomy. Due to phimosis the cancer was extensive. It had reached all the way to the publibone. He had a catheter for a few weeks before the op which was painful going through the tumour. I would say the pain after the op was pretty much miraculous. He didn’t even need paracetamol the ne
day! After a week or so it started to get painful. I think it was just due to the healing and tightening. The catheter was removed last week. 10 days after op. Sadly we’re now back to the issue wit
the enlarged prostate but that’s next on our list to tackle. He’s just pleased to have ditched the bag and be able to have a good soak in the bath. The results from the lymph nodes came back. One wa
good and the other not so. He’s due back in around 6 weeks to have the lymph nodes removed. Really hoping by Christmas he can have a big break from all of this
For now though we continue with recovery and trying to get him back out living life x
I hope your dad is doing ok my husband was given co codamol by his dr a couple months ago which helped. He had a glansectomy 7 weeks ago and is recovering well. It’s very daunting and not enough known about this cancer I done a lot of reading up on it to understand it more.
