Hi, I am 8 weeks post Whipple procedure and I feel great. A bit more tired than usual but okay. I start FOLFIRINOX next week for 6 months

i have always been fit and healthy, my oncologist told me that i can run again. I just wanted to know if there are any other runners out there that can share their experiences or how they accessed appropriate coaching from PTS/physiotherapists who specialise in cancer support. I have seen  young person running programme, are there any for older people? I’m 55.

I just need some advice of how to approach running again, I’ve read that you should run for a minute and build it up from there. Has anyone else gone straight back to running like before or worked up to it.

what kind of weight training do you do etc.

i would appreciate any help. I feel like it will help me cope with chemotherapy Blush

  • Hi Wave

This was on my radar, too!  I ran regularly, then had problems running and being sick after a mile.  Then the cancer diagnosis came within the year.  I think they were separate unrelated issues.

I started my treatment in Jan 2022 and one of my goals was to be able to run again.

I just waited until I felt able, and tried it.  I didn't do anything special.  I had good experiences, like returning to running club, running 4 miles with a friend a few times, back to parkruns.  But also there was a period where it was just hard work.  I wanted to stop after a mile.  It wasn't as easy or as enjoyable as it used to be.  The reality is I'm 20% slower now than "before".

I'm not sure it is totally attributable to the cancer.  Perhaps it's also the aging process.  And covid was a factor too.  I'm 57 now.

Edit:  I'm a kidney cancer person!  Had very good results from immunotherapy (2022 - 2024).

  • Thank you Mmum, I’m glad things are going well for you. And for your encouraging response Blush

did you continue to run during chemotherapy? Or after it was finished?

  • I will have to have a PICC line inserted for the 6 months. Does anyone have experience of exercising with this?

    many thanks Grin

  • I was on immunotherapy, which is a lot kinder to the body than chemo.

I have had to check my strava to recall correctly!  I tried adhoc during treatment. Successfully 6 months in (a few sessions).  But then not at all until I stopped treatment in June 2024,  Then I picked it up again.
