Hi, I have stage 4 cancer and cannot decide which chemo regime to try. At first I thought Folfirinox then change my mind as scared of side effects and chose ge
m and Abraxane, but now I am worried about loosing my hair !
does Folfirinox cause hair loss ? Or just thinning?
or should I choose GemCap , the weaker option but I keep my hair .
id love to hear your opinions
Hi,
My mum has had gem-abraxane which caused all her hair to fall out after 3-4 treatments. It started growing back 2-3 months in to her treatment.
She had 4 cycles of folfox (2 of the 3 drugs which are used in folfirinox) and she had no hair loss
She wasn't offered cold capping for either treatment
Mum was initially worried about losing her hair but in the end wanted treatment that gave her the best chance of survival. She's stage 4 too. She has an incredible wig that is identical to her 'old' hair. And I'd say her hair regrowth, eyebrows etc are thicker than pre-treatment I think because of all the fortified drinks she is taking
Thanks
can I ask how many rounds she had and how were the side effects of both ?
I think around 22 treatments of gem-abrax which worked out at 7 cycles over 8 months because of a few delays. Side effects were pain (but she had this pre-treatment), fatigue, some nausea, appetite changes, hair loss. Had a few trips to urgent care because of high temperatures but this was quickly resolved with antibiotics. A few treatments were delayed by a week because of low white blood cells. Her dose was reduced to 75% because of her temperature spikes and this made the side effects more manageable.
She's had 4 treatments of FOLFOX which unfortunately has not worked. She had similar side effects, the only new ones being indigestion and oral thrush. We were warned by everyone about neuropathy/ painful fingers and toes but she hasn't experienced it at all
Doctors think her pain is likely from the tumour rather than chemo so she is having a pain block procedure this week
Thanks Antonia
it sounds awful for her ! Is she able to go out and enjoy life at all? At the moment I am well and I can exercise and live well so I am dreading being in bed for days I’ll post treatment . What quality of life does she have now? Do you mind me asking how old your mum is ?
She had terrible stomach pains before diagnosis and was resting so much that days in bed because of chemo wasn't too much of a change. After 2 months (6 treatments) she was becoming a lot stronger and we had a fairly normal summer. Able to have days out, see friends. It's slower pace of life than before cancer and treatment but the alternative was that she wouldn't be here. Her routine on gem-abrax was treatment tuesday afternoon, in bed wednesday and thursday, and feeling better by friday.
The last month or so has been rough as the latest chemo hasn't worked. Her cancer is pressing on her nerves which is causing pain, and pain killers are causing fatigue etc. Hoping the nerve block will ease all this and improve quality of life. Despite all this my mum is keen to receive more treatment as she is happy to put up with the side effects. She definitely benefitted from having reduced strength chemo to reduce the toxicities.
She is 61 and stage 4. She's not the healthiest person in the world, but had no other health issues before diagnosis
