Hi my husband has recently been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He has had jaundice for over 4weeks.  He has had 2 failed attempts to put in a stent and biopsy as the surgeon said he couldn't get in as too restricted. He has a tube in his abdomen to drain bile into a bag. They will try a stent and biopsy again in a couple of days. Has anyone experienced this problem with having a stent put in?

  • Hi Carli

I am sorry to hear of your husband’s diagnosis. In my husband’s case a stent could not be put in as the bile duct had ‘disintegrated’ . He had the Whipple procedure shortly after. I think failing to get a stent in is not unusual and I’m sure the surgeons will find a way to relieve the jaundice . I hope the stent can be put in when they try again.

Squeaky thank you for your reply. They are going to try again tomorrow to do the  stent and biopsy procedure.  How is your husband?

  • Hello Carli

l am rather an old stager here and the stent issue happened nearly five years ago. My husband had the Whipple procedure but the cancer returned and he died over four years ago. This was my experience but others have different experiences.

Did your husband get the stent fitted?

    Hi Squeaky

Thank you for asking. No he still hasn't had it put in even though we were told by one Dr it was in. Very confusing. We were told yesterday that it's a difficult case and they haven't been able to get in not sure if it's inflammation bile or the tumour. He's having another scan today and they will try the metal stent procedure again sometime this week. He has a tube in the side of his abdomen to drain bile into a bag and currently draining about 700mls daily. However his bilirubin levels are reducing but not as quick as they'd like.  They had been 600 now 200.  Not sure if he'll be in a position to try chemo in January. So frustrating

  • Hi Carli

Yes, very frustrating for you both. I hope they manage to get the stent in. I’m not an expert but there seem to be a variety of ways to do this. Let us know how it goes.
