Bloating and wind whilst taking creon

I'm writing on behalf of my wife Anne who has terminal pancreatic cancer.

She is taking Creon 25000 capsules - 4 a day. But more recently she has been suffering with extreme discomfort with abdominal bloating and wind which she finds hard to pass. This is also affecting her sleep as at night whether laying on her sides or back she dscribes a physical discomfort that feels as though she is laying on a pebble beach. Can anyone else  identify with this problem and if so anything that may help.

Thanks. Geoff999

    Hi Geoff,

My mother used to complain of a lot of back and side pain too, when we saw our specialists they just treated this with painkillers, what have your specialists advised?

    Hi Geoff

With Creon it’s a bit hit and miss as to how much to take but it doesn’t sound like your wife is taking very much. My mum who was also an Anne took 2 40,000 with meals and a 25,000 with snacks so perhaps she could try increasing it. Peppermint tea can really help to pass the wind also. Have a chat with her specialist nurse.

  • Thanks Splodge.

We are seeing her GP today for another matter and we will raise your information with him

  • Hi JeuPerle

    Thanks for replying.

Anne discharged herself from her specialist and is now under her GP. Anne is 71 and had non Hodgkins Lymphoma 16 years ago and was cured,  but because of her Lupus she suffered greatly during chemo and swore she would never go through that again. Her pancreatic cancer  specialist offered surgery initially,  the whipple procedure 8 years ago,  when there was no evidence that her cyst was cancerous , which she refused. Then more recently a discotectomy which concentrates on the body and tail of the pancreas alone. Which seemed a contradiction in terms?  Anyway she just couldn't face it and opted to let nature take its course. Anne was given 6 to 12 months to live but the 12 months is already up and she's fine other than the bloating and wind from her Creon

  • Hi Geoff

Thank you for sharing Anne’s story. I hope you were able to see the GP as planned. As Splodge says the amount of Creon needs to be fine tuned to the individual. My husband had some bloating and certainly wind but he felt it was from the PC rather than a side effect of Creon.

i very much admire the way Anne has dealt with her situation. We hear a lot about people ‘fighting’ cancer and less about those brave people who let nature take its course.

Anne and I went to her GP a few days ago who prescribed peppermint capsules to be taken one hour before each meal. That, plus drinking peppermint tea,  seems to have releaved the problem at least initially.
