Back Pain after Whipple?

My husband (52) had Whipple procedure almost 4 weeks ago.  Although we've only had minor hiccups (drain site abscess so he is on antibiotics), we are dealing relatively well with getting him to eat multiple protein-rich small meals throughout the day. I hesitate to categorize his bowel movements since we are still in such an early stage of recovery and still re-introducing foods that it all could change.

But he is complaining about back pain.  Seems constant versus some of the blogs stating sharp, short lasting pain.  Middle of his back, on one side (right).  I will be addressing with his doctor we see next week, but thought I would come on and ask.  Is this 'normal' during recovery?  Is this an organ (or lack of an organ like gallbladder)?

Since I didn't see anyone else ask the question, I thought I'd put it out there and be able to possibly come back with an answer after the doctor visit.

Any insight or experience you or your loved one may have had would be appreciated!

  • Hi Julie/ and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community and, although I'm not a member of this group, I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list again.

While you're waiting for replies, it would be great if you could put something about your husband's diagnosis and treatment to date into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
