my mum is about to start chemo radiotherapy to try and shrink and control her pancreas cancer diagnosed July 2020.
shes had two rounds of chemo but that left her hospitalised with sepsis twice, she’s had 3 stents fitted and multiple blood transfusions.

since being off chemo she has recovered and has put on weight and things have felt normal, she has been smiling and does things around the house and cooks and cleans like a normal parent. It’s been really lovely. She takes painkillers to control her pain and has been offered radiotherapy as cancer has not grown or spread.

I’m worried that things are going to get hard again as radiotherapy will be 5 days a week for 5/6 weeks and can cause fatigue, and nausea -

doctors have also explained treatment is to prolong her life and this is really hurtful this journey is really hard

  • Hi and welcome to the online community

I'm very sorry to read that you mum was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year and I know what a difficult time this will be for you both.

I had a different type of cancer so can't help with any experiences on what might happen side effect wise when your mum starts her radiotherapy but remember, although there are possible side effects not every one gets them. It's important if your mum does get side effects that she reports them to her hospital team as they may have meds, etc that they can give her to help.

You are obviously a very caring daughter to have given up university to be with your mum. I'm not sure from your post if you're her carer or not but, if you are, you might like to join the carers only group which is a safe and supportive group to discuss your worries and emotions with other carers. If you're not your mum's carer then you might like to join instead the supporting someone with incurable cancer group where you can again discuss your worries along with practical things around palliative care.

If you'd like to join either of these groups then clicking on the link I've created will take you straight there. You can then join and post in the say way as you did here.

It would be great if you could pop something about your mum's journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
