Recurrence

Hi guys,  glad to find you.

I had debunking surgery for stage 2b ovarian cancer in March this year.  I recovered well but I have very poor kidney function so chemo was iffy.  However I began a course of chemo but  half doses to protect my kidney but had to stop after 5 sessions because of side effects.  Since then I’ve had two three monthly MRIs which appear normal but the latest one has shown something concerning and I have to have a Pet Scan.  My CA 125 has dropped from 50 to 27 to 11.  I’m obviously scared it’s a recurrence and wondering if anyone had a similar experience.  I’m 72.

  • Hi Eilish

    Welcome to the ovarian group.

I am sorry to hear that you had a diagnosis of ovarian cancer in March. I had chemo for my own cancer and I know that it can be hard and it can affect many areas of your body. My own chemo went ahead but dosage needed to be reduced. My kidneys were ok but I did have issues in other areas.

I can understand your worry about recurrence and I think it is something we all fear. I suppose that it is promising that your previous 2 MRI's were clear so if there is something amiss then it is a recurrence at an early stage. This means that it is normally more treatable. Also your CA125 level is well within the normal range. Anything under 35 is considered normal. I think try to focus on what you know at the moment- something was seen and it needs checking with the PET scan. It may not be a recurrence but if it is then it has not been there long.

With regards to the chemo stopping- you still managed 5 sessions before you needed to stop so that is a fair amount of chemo and will hopefully have had a good effect.

I hope the PET scan can be done quickly so you are not waiting too long to find out what is happening.

In the meantime if you feel like talking things through would help, then please do give the Support Line a call.

  • Hello Eilishgl, you’re not alone. I had surgery and 6 bouts of chemotherapy for Ovarian cancer stage 3c and I am 58, I will be have my next 6 rounds after Christmas. The chemo was hard going first time, but it has to be done a second time apparently. For me I am wondering is it a reoccurrence or do I just need the second bout of chemotherapy to fully irradiation the cancer because the first one was not enough. The way I am looking at it, is, they have removed most of the cancer already and the second bout is mopping up what is left. They can adjust the level of chemo they give you.

Not sure if I have been helpful, just wanted you to know your not by yourself and it is natural to be frightened.
