Second Cancer

Hello

I was diagnosed with Grade 3 stage 3 breast cancer in 2002. I underwent surgery chemo & radiotherapy.

19th March I was 999 admitted to hospital with sepsis following tubal torsion. On MRI & CT a large ‘tennis ball’ sized mass was on my left ovary. I was in for 72h IV antibiotics & on day of discharge received tumour marker result. CA125 was 8600.

I was referred to the local specialist unit. Consultant plans to do radical surgery on Tuesday (removal of cervix, womb, tubes, ovaries, omentum & peritoneal washings). I understand it’s a huge op. Couple of questions?

(1) Has anyone experienced OC as the second primary?

(2) How long do you think I’m likely to be hospitalised? Hospital info says 5-7 days. Is that normal?

(3) Has anyone had as high a CA125 & did it come down after surgery?

Thanks in advance

  • Hi I can answer 2 of your questions

I too had BC mine was early stage grade 3 ER+ HER- have been on tamoxifen since 2014  NED then I was diagnosed last year with stage 3C ovarian cancer- not BRCA new primary .  I was in hospital from Thursday to Sunday so 5-7 days sounds about right.  My CA125 was 98 and now 10 .  Good luck with your treatment xx

    love

  • Hi,

Like Janet, I can answer two of your three questions based on my own experience.

Following diagnosis in November 2020 I had a full hysterectomy in December and was in hospital for 6 days. Some people were discharged at day 4 or 5 and others as long as 14 - I think it largely depends on how your body responds to the surgery (and of course the scale of it) and how quickly you’re able to get mobile. Most important is to do what feels right for you and take it one day at a time.

My CA125 was 400+ at time of diagnosis. Following surgery and the first 2 of my 6 cycles of chemo it was down to 19, and now at cycle 5 of chemo it’s 17 (I believe anything below 30 counts as the “normal” range).

Hope all goes well with your surgery on Tuesday - be thinking if you and, whenever you feel up to it, it’d be great to hear how you got on,

    love Bxx

  • Hi Tarinim I have secondary oc. I had a bowel cancer op in Sept 19 followed by 4 cycles of chemo. In March this year I underwent emergency surgery to remove my ovaries. I had a 5 inch mass in my pelvis. The op went well and I was in hospital 5 days. My CEA markers are normal at the moment. I am having chemo 8 cycles over 6 months. It's a really scary time, so many questions too. Have faith in your surgeon and in yourself. Good luck and will be thinking of you. Missymoo2 x

    Hi Tarinim,

I hope you are doing well.  I had my radical hysterectomy on the 22nd of April only a few days before you and am recovering slowly but surely so fingers crossed you are too. I am finding out about proposed Chemo tomorrow.
Reading other replies I hadn't realised that my cancer could be a secondary not a new primary (I assumed the latter)  so I will be sure to ask the doctor more about that and the implications.

Let us know how you are doing
