Hi - I was looking for advice on coping - my mum is 84 and just diagnosed - my father is not in good health after surviving hospital with covid - I feel consumed - overwhelmed and terrified of the future I need help on being strong for them xx

  • Hi

I'm very sorry to hear that your mum has just been diagnosed with ovarian cancer and, on top of that, your dad is struggling with the after effects of covid.

It's natural that you should feel as you do about everything. Lots of people say "I need help on being strong" but, unfortunately, there's no magic answer on how to achieve that. I think it's more about looking after yourself so that you can cope better. You might find this information from Macmillan on your feelings when someone has cancer useful, as it has suggestions on how to cope. One of the suggestions is to focus on things that you can change or control rather than on things that you can't.

You might also like to join the family and friends group which is a safe and supportive place to share your worries with others who have a family member living with cancer. If you'd like to do this, just click on the link I've created and then choose 'click to join' on the page that opens.

When you have a minute, it would be really useful if you could pop something about your mum's journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

    Sending a supportive ((hug))
