hi, i had a gastric bypass is turkey a year ago, i was informed then that i had an ovarian cyst that needed checking so my gp sent me for an ultrasound,. comfirmed 8cm simple cyst in september (no blood tests) i had a gyney appointment beginning of feb basically saying it has to come out eventually but subject to ca125 being normal it can be reassessed in 6 months but 2 subsequent blood tests came back raised so i had another ultrasound and blood tests repeated, dr rang me the next day saying dont panic but we need to do a ct scan in 3 days to check your other organs and we need to operate urgently…to be honest i could hardly understand the dr because of his strong accent but what i heard was alarming, im now thinking they suspect cancer and are checking it hasnt spread…..ct scan is tomorrow and i was hoping someone has had a similar story and im just overreacting

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

How did your CT scan go?

  • Hi mrsOmop

    Welcome to the Ovarian group.

It sounds that the doctors are being thorough and this is a good thing. A simple ovarian cyst will show certain features on an ultrasound and this is how they would normally proceed. Because of its size and the potential to change over time, they would normally actively monitor you.

The ca125 is just a marker and does not diagnose cancer. Any result under 35 is considered normal. Any result over 35 would suggest that something is going on and it needs to be investigated further. Ca125 can be raised for different reasons, cancer is only one of them. A recent infection for eg could cause it to rise.

The CT scan would be done routinely and they are checking to make sure that only the ovary is affected and to prepare for surgery but also to rule out any involvement with anything else in the area.

Once the surgery is done then anything removed will be sent to pathology for testing and this is what will hopefully rule out any cancer. The ca125 result can not rule out or confirm cancer.

I hope that your CT scan went ok and that your surgery can be done quickly.

Please do give the Support Line a call if you need to talk things through. I understand what I worrying time it can be to go through these tests.

    Good Luck

  • thank you for your reply, my ct scan was great, over within minutes! just waiting for results now, i got the results from my ultrasound scan just saying my cyst has grown and changed with septations and my ca125 remains consistently high, hopefully ct scan is clear and they whip the cyst out soon
