Hi, I was diagnosed with stage 1 germ cell ovarian cancer back in june/july of this year and underwent surgery to remove my tumour (and ovary). This was the scariest thing I’ve ever been through at just 18 years old. I was lucky that the surgery went well and I was determined cancer free with my doctors saying I just needed to be under surveillance for 5 years. I’m coming up to my first blood test (tumour markers) and check up scan and I’m really struggling with the fear of it not going as I would like. Does anybody have any advice on how to deal with this? I don’t want this fear to control me for years to come.
Hi eleanor03 and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is an informative and supportive place to be.
That's great to hear that you're cancer free after surgery this year but I think everyone here will recognise the fear of recurrence. When I was diagnosed with melanoma 6 years ago that was all I could think of, and my 3-monthly check-ups were always worrying times. However, with time these worries gradually receded.
You might light to take a look at this article by Dr Peter Harvey called After The Treatment Finishes - Then What as I know lots of people have found it very helpful in understanding that what they are feeling and going through is perfectly normal.
Wishing you all the best with your upcoming tests and scans.
