I’m 57 with a strong family history of BC. I’ve been having left side/ pelvic pain and nausea for a few months. My pap was normal and my doctor said he couldn’t feel anything abnormal. I pushed for an ultrasound and the results were normal (though my right ovary was not visible, which is supposedly normal for post-menopause?) Left ovary is 1.5 cm all around. No masses or free fluid. My doc refused to order the ca125 test because he said it’s not reliable. Is the ultrasound pretty conclusive? I’m still nervous. Thanks for any input.
i am so sorry to hear that you are feeling this way, i would go back to docs and demand a test. it is simple to do and could put your nerves at bay with a good result. my ca125 was 250 , but i was being tested for para thyroid and high calcium levels, i actually peed blood for 24 hours and the hospital did not do a blood test, just checked for infection in my wee. it was only when i went back to docs and said that the pain was draining and my quality of life was severley diminished that they did the blood test. so what i am saying is PUSH for the test, create a fuss if need be, but get your answers xx
Hi Chrissy, can I check did you have an internal ultrasound because if not I would insist on having an internal ultrasound.
Regarding the CA125 test whilst the test is not conclusive in itself it is one of the many factors uses to assess your risk and I do believe you should have the test too.
Personally I would not accept what you have been told so far by your GP xx
Hi Chrissy,
Someone else on this site recently posted this guidance from nice, which clearly states that testing CA125 should be done as standard:

Definitely worth pushing your GP on this - even though it’s not 100% conclusive it’s one of the few tools we have in diagnosing (or hopefully ruling out) OC.
Love and best wishes,
Bx
