Hello everyone, i am 40 years old and i have been told today my cancer spread to my overies, so i will have a open hysterectomy next week.
i apologies at first as i am not a very good writer, but i will try my best to explain my situation. I am currently very very worried about my recovery period. I live alone and do not have any support system right now, specially because of the lockdown nobody is able to come. So i have to do everything myself during recovery period. I am scared anxious and very very worried.
i will be very grateful if you kindly share your experience with me and give me some advice. I have few days in my hand and i want to get prepared as much as possible. it’s very unlikely i will ger any support in this unusual situation so i have manage everything myself unfortunately.
could I please get some advice.
Hi Cynthia,
I am so sorry you are in this position, especially at this time. This first week or so that you are home after abdominal hysterectomy you will be tired and not able to be able to stand or walk for long. You will not be able to lift or carry things for even longer. I suggest you stock up your freezer with lots of single meals that you can easily defrost / heat up. I would also think about how you ensure you can get plenty to drink without needing to walk to the kitchen each time.
I would definitely investigate getting help - anyone coming to help you would be doing essential travel. You might want to move in with someone (I did this as my husband was away) or have someone move in with you. If you don't have anyone you can do this with I would contact your local council and/or look in social media for volunteer groups who can help.
Good luck.
I’m sorry you’re in this position on your own.
I found silly things difficult and things I hadn’t considered. I managed to get a travel kettle as I drink tea like there’s no tomorrow. I also poured milk into smaller jugs.
I agree that a good stock of freezer meals is a great idea, I live with my other half but he can only just manage toast so I was prepared. Even a frozen pizza was a stretch for him lol. Biscuits were a must especially ginger it’s as I felt a bit queasy sometimes. Peppermint casuals were a great for the wind and peppermint tea!
Make a bed on the same floor as your bathroom if you can so you don’t have to go up and down stairs.
Have extra pillows to prop yourself up with if needed. I also found a flat sheet as well as my quilt because I was constantly hot and cold.
Get a fan! I had lots of hot flushes.
Download rubbish to watch as you will probably sleep through a lot of stuff!
Use this site to catch up with people. Keep in touch with family and friends but maybe have a ready made message to tell people you are resting. Keep your phone on vibrate, if you’re awake you will check it, if you’re sleeping it won’t wake you.
I had a full hysterectomy in May last year and 6 rounds of chemo.I’m on the other side now, 6 months clear. Last Chemo was in October. Life gets so much better than where you are now! Keep positive xxx
