CA 125 what to expect

So I was lurking in the cervical cancer group and posted a while back that I was afraid to go to the GP about my symptoms. I finally did that today and while she seemed unconcerned about the possibility of cervical cancer as my last smear was only 18 months ago she did seem to think my bloating and left sided pain were more suggestive of ovarian cancer if anything although hopefully just a cyst or something. She’s had done orders CA125 to be done tomorrow and I should get a scan appt through in a couple of weeks. How long do CA125 results take to come back normally? And if that are high will everything else then be fast tracked?

  • Hi little miss,

Different areas will have different times for results, did your gp give you an indication of when you can expect them? You could ask at your appointment tomorrow? I've not had a CA125 test as I'm here with a dodgy womb but my blood results depend on the type of test they take, some come back in a day or two, others can take weeks. CA125 can be raised by other things, like infection, so try not to dwell on it too much. Your ultrasound should give you a better idea of what's happening. I know it's rubbish to wait on the unknown but try and keep busy and distracted whilst you wait, lots of people pass through the group and get the all clear.

    lots of love

CA125 levels are normal up to a reading of 30or so but could be raised for a variety of issues as has been said. The ultrasound I had they could see the mass immediately although they have to let a doctor tell you the results rather than the radiographer talking the scan. Mine was done at the gp surgery and the gp rang me at home. Because they could see a “mass” I was immediately put on the 2 week cancer pathway and was seen at hospital 10 days later - by then I was very ill. They were going to book me a ct scan “within the next few weeks” but my partner told them there was no way I could wait - she told them I couldn’t come home as I was too poorly. Good on her, they took me in there and then and started draining my tummy of Ascites (fluid caused by cancer) and I had scan and biopsy within 24hours.

My CA125 count went up to over 1600 in December due to my stage 4A ovarian cancer. 6 months later after chemo and operation, my test went down to 8 - Amazing! The test is usually ready a few hours after it’s taken and you can call your nurse the day after to check if you want to.

Good luck with everything. I m

ba k at work now and feel almost normal although do get tired if I do too much. Take things as easy as you can
