I have recently been seen by a Gynaecologist as I have had menaporsal bleeding and they are unable to get a biopsy as I had an oblasion 10 years ago.  I was told that to be sure that I did not have Ovarian Cancer the only way of detecting this would be a hysterectomy.  I came away from the hospital confused.

I have not been offered any blood tests or any MRI scans, is this right?

i have put a complaint in and they consultant is seeing me again tomorrow, does any one know what I should be requesting be the decision of a  hysterectomy is made..

many Thanks xx

  • Hi ginnie,

im not a medic, but I'd recommend that you give the Macmillan helpline a call and ask to speak to a nurse, they should be able to help you prepare for your appointment tomorrow (they open again tomorrow morning). Or you could ask to speak to your gp, or for a second opinion from another hospital.

Your ovaries can usually be checked by a laparoscopy https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/laparoscopy/ where the look inside your belly to check on them. Your womb can usually be checked by a hysteroscopy https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/hysteroscopy/

The CA125 blood test can indicate ovarian cancer but CA125 can be raised by other things, like infection.

As far as I know, again I'm not a medic, an MRI scan wouldn't pick up microscopic cancer cells, it would only highlight a tumour.

The only way to diagnose cancer, generally, is with a biopsy and then testing the sample in a lab, that's why the hysteroscopy and laparoscopy would usually be used.

An ultrasound scan can usually give an indication of what's happening, (e.g. If you have cysts or fibroids or polyps) have you had an ultrasound?

    Xxx

I have a Hysterectomy but they were unable to get through the cavity of my womb because of the Oblasion for my periods 10 years ago. Other than this nothing else.

My cervix is all clear and nothing to worry about there.

    will see what happens later.xx

  • How did you get on at your appointment?

Hi there. After a long conversation with the consultant, I obviously missed something when I saw her two weeks ago.  I though it was Ovarian Cancer what I go be at risk off but it is uterus Cancer. As there is no other way of eliminating thann a Hysterectomy there is no other choice than to have it done.

6-8 weeks. I can not go through every day wondering if I have got it or not so this is the only option.

    your views plsBlushxx.

  • Hi Ginnie,

Its womb cancer that I am here with, I'm 38 and had a hysterectomy nearly two years ago, that was all my treatment. If you are post menopausal you won't have surgical menopause to content with, that's been the worst bit for me. I had an MRI scan to check for spread and to give them an idea of the size of my womb, which was described as 'bulky' lol!

You can still ask for a second opinion or see your gp if you are not sure of your next steps. Come over and post in the womb group, you will get loads of opinions from the lovely group there, they are at https://community.macmillan.org.uk/cancer_types/womb-cancer/

i had full open surgery and they took the lot, tubes, cervix, ovaries and womb. I was surprised at how well I felt, we all agree on that, I was up and showered and dressed on my own the next morning, you just have to be really careful about restricting your movements for a few months.

some younger women with womb cancer are being treated with hormone therapy but they monitor the success with a hysteroscopy so I imagine that wouldn't be possible if they can't get into your womb.

    Lots of love
