Saw consultant today on urgent two week referral about vascular structure with solid components on my ovary during an ultrasound 3 weeks ago and raised CA125 of 95. I have had constipation, indigestion, frequent urination and some bloating and feeling really tired for 12 months or so but had put that down to perimenopause work stresses and generally getting older. I have had heavy vagina bleeding for 6 weeks and have had a hysteroscopy and endometrial biopsy (results not back yet) last week.

I found the consultant very patronising and quite dismissive. When I talked about my symptoms he was very dismissive and said I probably had IBS and should speak to my GP about it, he didn’t actually ask me about my symptoms I had to bring them up. When he spoke about the ovarian structure I asked what vascular structure meant and he said it was a medical term and I didn’t need to worry about it. I could see he had written “mixed echogenicity “ and I asked what this meant and he said “it’s scientific terms that you don’t need to worry about, I’m not here to teach you about science”. I felt so patronised and angry. By the way I’m a science teacher, not that he knew that.

he has, however, referred me for a CT scan, and said if that comes back ok and the endometrial biopsy comes back ok then I will have another CA125 test and ultrasound in three months time to see if anything has changed.

i left feeling so angry at how patronising and dismissive he was that now I don’t have full confidence in him at all.

Any thoughts appreciated.

  • Hi scienceteach,

im sorry that you didn't have a great experience, it might be worth giving the Macmillan helpline a ring and asking to speak to a nurse, they might be able to explain the medical terms to you, or your gp might be able to do the same.

Id take heart from knowing that although he didn't explain what he is doing, he has referred you on for further investigation through the biopsy and ct scan. If you get the results from your scan and biopsy and still aren't satisfied you can still ask for a second opinion.

I had about four or five different doctors through the diagnosis process so you might even be lucky and get someone different the next time.

lots of love and I hope you have nice treats planned to distract yourself whilst you wait

  • Hi

im not surprised you are feeling angry. It took me two years to get a diagnosis so I have some experience of this kind of behaviour.

at least he has set a plan for follow up. However Drs just don’t need to be like this and unless we give feed back they won’t change. I would definitely make sure I didn’t see this Dr again by talking to GP and being referred elsewhere or to another consultant.

The day I finally found out that I had a 20cm tumour, the gynae on for that day told me it might be nothing - luckily I wasn’t under her care ..it’s such a distressing time. You need clarity and not someone patronising you!

    best of luck Fizz

I’m sorry to ear about your experience and just wondered who your consultant is? Does his surname begin with G? It sounds very much like the experience I had. My Consultant was arrogant, dismissive and made me feel like a stupid, silly woman. Even telling me I did not have Cancer and ignoring my Doctors14 day referral letter and suggestion of Ovarian Cancer. My diagnosis was delayed in all by about 7 months. In hindsight I would and should have asked for a second opinion. But given he referred me to the local Cancer hospital oncologist team who showed no concern I didn’t think I had another option. In the end I went for a hysterectomy when the disease was found.

I would ask for a second opinion and possibly an MRI as well as a CT scan.

Good Luck and I hope you have good news.
