hi, the day I was dreading has arrived, the results of my genetics testing which showed up positive for a pathogenic variant in the BRCA 1 gene.
I was almost sure this would be negative as there's no breast cancer or ovarian cancer in either side of my parents family, only cancer present was an uncle on mums side who had prostrate cancer, and now knowing my result this mutancy could have come from that side of family, or like the letter stated it might just have started up on its own. (Though most likely to be inherited)
so.... is this the beginning of the end? Can any one BRCA positive shed any light onto this, it's easier hearing from people rather than reading statistics ... totally shocked
Hi. I have BRCA1+ ovarian cancer. My mum and aunt died of breast cancer. At the time, we didn't know the faulty gene was in the family because there was a feud which meant that one side didn't communicate with the other and key information about cancer in the family got lost. By the time I hit my late 30s, I had started putting two and two together and went for genetic counselling. They said I had a high chance of having the fault based on the family history. After that, I went for annual mammograms and rudimentary ovarian cancer screening which led to my diagnosis. In my experience, it definitely hasn't been the beginning of the end. I was diagnosed 13 years ago. Admittedly, I have relapsed several times but I have had good responses to chemo and other treatments and have had decent remissions. I think because I already knew I most likely had the fault, it wasn't a shock. The hard part for me was telling other people in the family, especially those with kids. It's like throwing in an emotional hand grenade. You will definitely need time to take in the implications of having the mutation and you should also discuss it with your oncologist as they can talk through the implications from a medical point of view.
Thank you Bella Bee, I guess I panicked as really thought it would be negative, I have already had surgery and chemo for ovarian cancer and was just getting my head straight again, now this worry. Thank you for your reply, it's encouraging. I shall look up the group x
