Hi there
I am from the Breast Cancer Group. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008 and had surgery chemo and rads. I am still here thank goodness.
This post concerns my partners 35 year old daughter, She was diagnosed with PCOS last year but has been bleeding every day since then. She went to the Doctor today who mentioned Ovarian Cancer. She was sent for a blood test I assume to check CA 125 level but from what I gather this is not very reliable.
Both her grandmothers had breast cancer so my partner is obviously worried sick.
What sort of scan is she likely to face now?
I know lots about BC but nothing about OC so please excuse my ignorance
Sue
Hi. If there is concern about OC, then it is right that the CA125 test is done right off. This will at least establish a baseline level, against which future tests (and past ones) can be measured. I am wondering if they ran this test last year when the PCOS was diagnosed? Normal levels are up to 35; while the test is not always reliable, and be influenced by other conditions, for many women it is an indicator of OC. It has been a while since I was diagnosed but after the blood test, a transvaginal ultrasound was done, followed by an MR scan because the ultrasound was inconclusive. She might also think about genetic counselling (given the family history) which would lead to a BRCA test if OC was diagnosed. This is important because it has implications for future treatments and eligibility for some clinical trials. The other thing to be aware of is that, for many of us, the final diagnosis of OC and its staging is confirmed after surgery, once the histology results are available. It's a lot to take in; try to take it one step at a time.
Thank you for your advice. Not sure if a test was done last year but I would like to think it was.
As we all know the waiting is the most difficult time
Hope you are doing well now.
Thank you
