Hi all, i was wondering if anyone has any tips for eating after chemo? Chemo day im fine but for another week the thought of eating is the worst thing, I tend to loose 7-9lb in the first week. Im trying to sort as it leaves me feeling so ill and the sickness is over powering along with the consipation. I have chatted to the nurses but they say just eat little and often. Everything i put in my mouth tastes disgusting. I have chemo every 3 weeks Paclitaxel and Carboplain. During my last week i manage to put some back on. Any tips would greatly be appreciated. Thank you.

I had chemo for breast cancer and agree that a lot of food tastes horrible for about a week afterwards. I found that eating spicy food like curries and chilli was best for me as that seemed to taste as it should do. Also pineapple always tasted like pineapple so I drank pineapple juice and ate pineapple slices.

  • Hello there I hope you are feeling a bit better today; I was diagnosed stage IV ovarian cancer this time last year and under went the same chemo, then full abdominal surgery and then finished off my main chemo - am now on targeted treatment and thankfully in remission. Everyone’s body will cope differently to treatment so in my opinion there’s no one size fits all, however, to the best of my ability I followed a keto diet whilst undergoing chemo which is predominantly eating high fat (good ones like avocado, salmon, nuts) and high protein (chicken, turkey, cheese, steak) if not vegetarian along with a little green veg/salad and limiting carbs, especially sugar but we all need a treat right? Not only did it help with the fatigue but a tiny portion of yogurt, berries and nuts really helped any sickness I had and helped it pass quickly. Staying hydrated was also crucial (for me water and green tea) which helped with any possible constipation (which occasionally happened when taking steroids post chemotherapy treatment). Overall small portions were better, I did looses my taste towards the end of my treatment and kept on adding more salt to my food; the keto was quite strict and I appreciate it’s not for everyone- it certainly helped me and if there’s anything further I can help you with please reach out, wishing you all the best Emma x

  • Hi Emma, thanks for the reply i will look into that. I was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer early on this year and told its stage 4 widespread. I have just finished 6/6 chemo cycles and have a appointment next wednesday to discuss further plans. I was hoping for debulking but not sure if this is on the cards as unknown if its shrunk enough to allow me that. Guess will know Wednesday. Many thanks Gill x

  • Hi Gill, I’m sure your oncologist will have a treatment plan for you and will guide you on what’s best from your blood work & your bodies response to your recent chemotherapy,  take care, best wishes Emma x
