Fallopian Tube Cancer

Hi

I am new to this forum. I have joined because 4 weeks ago, after an ultrasound and an MRI, I was diagnosed with a post-menopause (I am 57) hematosalpinx and endometriosis. I am waiting for an appointment for a hysteroscopy and biopsy as there's a chance the hematosalpinx could be caused by fallopian tube cancer. I had an ectopic pregnancy in 2010 and was told at the time that the other tube was also damaged. I had the option at the time to have the other damaged tube removed, but I chose not to because the ectopic pregnancy triggered an autoimmune illness and I didn't want anymore surgery as I was dealing with that.

I have read that fallopian tube cancer is quite rare and I can't find any posts about it on this forum. Does anyone here have fallopian tube cancer, and if so could you give me any insights into the process of diagnosis and treatment?

Many Thanks

  • Hi  and welcome to Macmillan and the ovarian group.

I’m sorry to read you’ve had to have some scans done and are now waiting for a hysteroscopy and biopsy-it’s always stressful waiting to find out more information about what might be next.

Fallopian tube cancer is a rare cancer, and I haven’t been able to find any other posts about this specific cancer in the group. This link I’ve made will take you to the Macmillan information on it which you might find useful while you’re waiting to see if you get any more replies-

I hope you’ll not have too long much longer to wait for your hysteroscopy and biopsy and that you’ll come back and let us know how you get on.

  • Hi Sarah,

Thank you so much for the information on the link. The booklet "Understanding cancer  of the ovary, fallopian tube or peritoneum" was especially helpful.

I'm still waiting for a date for the hysteroscopy, but will keep you updated.

    Many Thanks

  • I’m glad the information was helpful for you. When you have a rarer type of cancer, it can be difficult to find others who can relate, but hopefully this will not be your diagnosis and things will be more straightforward to manage. Fingers crossed.

  • Hello may I please ask what other symptoms you had if any? I'm going through something similar at the moment but still awaiting to see the gynaecologist for answers.

  • Hi,

Thanks for your reply, I was starting to feel like I was the only one going through this and it's good to know I'm not alone. However I am sorry to hear you are going through something similar.

The symptoms started with post-menopause vaginal bleeding, which is mostly just spotting but at times has been fairly heavy. I have pain in my lower abdomen which gets worse with walking and physical activity. I can only walk for 10 minutes at a time and then the pain gets bad so I have to sit or lie down and rest. I am taking pain killers every day. Also when I eat I don't have much of an appetite as I feel full really quickly and my stomach is really bloated.

What symptoms do you have? I hope you don't have to wait to long to see the gynaecologist.

I look forward to hearing from you Slight smile

  • Similar to you although confusing, I'm 45 perimenopausal I had been having irregular bleeding and spotting for a few months, had a transvaginal scan and they found what they think is blood in my fallopian tube. However they said my bloods were normal and that my condition can be managed either by conservatively watching or surgery, no explanation that was it. My symptoms have been irregular bleeding, bloating, low appetite, fatigue, lower abdominal cramps that are sometimes very intense. I also take paracetamol nearly every day but try to hold off as long as I can. I can't get in to see my gynaecologist until Oct 14th, I was originally seeing her for menopause and this was picked up by accident. So I'm not sure if I should be referred to someone else. I tried to get an appointment with my GP but could only get that for 22nd August. I'm a little confused what the blood is caused by and the letter said "likely hematosalpinx" so still not sure

  • Yes, that sounds very similar to my situation. There is not much information on the internet about hematosalpinx, and most of it relates to ectopic pregnancy, or other causes are a blockage, endometriosis, or fallopian tube cancer (which I hope neither of us have). The best information I have found is through the link sent by Sarah (above) which was helpful. Unfortunately hematosalpinx, other than with ectopic pregnancy seems quite rare.

As you say, the most frustrating thing is not having any answers and having to wait so long to see a gynaecologist. The 14th of October seems a really long time to wait! Hopefully your GP can ask them to see you sooner.  My MRI scan was nearly 2 months ago, and a month ago I was told that I would be getting a hysteroscopy "within 2 weeks" and I haven't heard anything since. I have contacted PALS (Patient Advice Line) at my local hospital and they have said they will try and chase up the appointment. In the meantime my quality of life is affected because I am in too much pain to get out and about very much. I am trying to keep busy and not think about it, and I have signed up for an online Mindfulness for Health course with Breath Works, which is a course for using mindfulness to manage chronic health conditions, which I am finding really helpful.

Keep in touch and let me know how you get on with the gynaecologist. Stay strong and look after yourself.

    All the best

  • I will keep you updated once I have spoken with my GP. Fingers crossed I can be seen sooner. Keep in touch x
