I recently had to have fluid in my abdomen drained.  I found the insertion and removal painful.  They advised that the fluid would return and it may meed to be drained again.  My abdomen is showing all the signs of more fluid and they have asked me to think about having a permanent drain which I am not sure if.  Can anyone advise me on their experiences  please. Thanks

  • Sorry to hear this. I have had this procedure 3 times. Each time was different. After the last drainage was performed I then had chemotherapy and since then by abdomen has no significant swelling and since the last 3 days I have abolished the painkillers. I have got stage 3 primary ovarian cancer peritoneal metastasis. I did not have a permanent drain but was drained every 14 days.

  • Thank you Lieke  for your reply.  It has given me food for thought.  I pray you treatment goes well.  Thanks

  • Hi

i have had abdomin drain twice wasn’t a very nice experience I was hospitalised after the 2nd one for a month, the fluid moved from my abdomin th the cavity round my lungs I ended up on 100% oxygen and my family were told I needed chemotherapy but I was to sick there was nothing they could do

long story short me and another consultant decided to give it a try, I thought if I’m dying I’m gonna go fighting but it worked

why can’t you get the chemo to stop the cells producing the fluid instead of a perminant  drain or before it transfers to the lungs

i would ask this question before you decide, but I suppose your decision has been made by now

hope all is going well for you
