My mum went to hospital with symptoms of loss of appetite, bloating, pain from the right rib, down the same side, back and lower stomach. She was initially told she had a bacterial infection in stomach or where her gallbladder used to be and was prescribed antibiotics. Once finishing these, she still had symptoms so went back. Another doctor found a mass in the left ovary using a 'simple iltrasound' (he insinutated this wasnt the best source of scan) and couldn't provide any further detail. We paid for a transvaginal and ultrasound privately - we were told there is a 4cm complex cyst with 'solid components' on the left ovary, yet there was a lot of gas and was unable to see the right ovary... Today she did another ultrasound and the doctor couldn't say much, and she also did the ca125 blood test - results pending. Another GP we spoke to suggested the chest pain was indigestion. It seems odd the pain she is experiencing is on the other side of where the complex cyst is. I know there are people out there who have unfortunately been diagnosed with IBS and ovarian cancer has been missed. Has anyone experienced anything similar or have been going through cancer screening yet the pain in the opposite side turned out to be IBS or anything similar? She is 57 slightly overweight, has high blood pressure. She says she has more diahroea than normal, loss of appetite and some foods make her feel worse such as breads and pastas. She has no bleeding.
Hi
I thought I'd provide the latest....
My mums ca125 has come back fine. The Dr cannot see any evidence of cancer in the MRI or CT results. This does not mean the complex cyst is not cancerous however. The next step is for the team to dicuss the treatment option, which is most likely a full hysterectomy which is fine as I do not need any more siblings ;) This is due to take place next week Wednesday then she will be called on Thursday.
There is so much negative news on Google so I do really hope this gives someone hope out there going through the same thing x
That's great news, are they doing the hysterectomy with keyhole or do you not know yet? The fact that her ca125 is fine is definitely a good sign, mine was 137 and it should be under 35!!
Best not to look at Google, a lot of the stuff on there is well out of date and not necessarily true, stick to Macmillan and Cancer Research for the facts.
I'm sure all will be fine for your mum and look after her when she's had the hysterectomy x
Hi
No idea yet - apparently they have meetings on Wednesdays with specialists who will review her CT/MRI results and then decide on the options. They have warned her the hysterectomy is likely which I guess is a bigger op but a better option. They may then send the cyst off to find out what it is and then I guess we will take it from there. They didn't tell her the ca125 results which I found a little odd but I will be with her on Thursday when she gets the call so I will nudge to find out. They did say it might still be cancer but early so again we will need to wait. Will keep you posted. Hope you have a lovely weekend x
Well I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. You have a good weekend too, keep your chin up x
Hi
Just an update from my side...
We got a call today from the consultant to say mum is being referred to another hospital to discuss operation, highly likely to be a hysterectomy as the specialists who have reviewed her results are 'mildly concerned' it's borderline ovarian cancer.
Anna
It's good that they are getting it sorted quickly, your mum will be fine, I had my hysterectomy 4 weeks ago now and I'm doing really well. I start my chemo next Thursday so I'll keep you updated x
I hope so! They don't seem to have any other feelings on whether it is or isn't though. In her words 'mildly concerned' it's cancerous which is a little worrying. I'm glad to hear you are recovering from your op well. I am assuming it was an open surgery? X
If it is cancer then they'll remove it and she'll probably need chemo but it's not the end of the world, it's not easy but she'll get through it, you both need to be strong.
Yes I had open surgery as I had fibroids which meant my womb was the size of a 20 week pregnant woman's but if your mum's womb is normal size they may well so it through keyhole surgery x
We will get through it, we all will
I see - she says she feels bloated at times but it's not consistent and since having made changes to her diet it's not as bad. Her stomach isn't swollen or hard either.
X
Bloating could be a number of things but if she has ovarian cancer then the hysterectomy will sort that out.
Yes, we will all get through this
