Hi. I was diagnosed with cancer on my cervix a few weeks ago and referred for an MRI. At the same time my abdomen ballooned and I was told I had a large mass on my ovary and ascites. It got so bad I’m now in hospital and the ascites has been draining since Thursday. On Wednesday I think I’m having a radical hysterectomy to take ovaries away too. They strongly believe I have both cervical and ovarian cancer. Has anyone else had this? They scanned my chest on Friday and all I’ve been told about that was that my surgeon would discuss the results and surgery options with me on Monday. I’m scared out of my mind tbh. I’ve never had any health issues and now all this. I’m told my cervix cancer would probably by hysterectomy and no further treatment but the ovary is more complicated. My head is a mess. Any advice welcome.

I’ve spoken to you before in the cervical cancer group, but I’ve just picked up your post here too. I’m so sorry to see what you’ve got going on, which must be incredibly difficult to get your head round.
Cervical cancer is normally only treated with a hysterectomy if it’s early stage, so I think you will need to have a discussion with your doctor to determine whether or not you have cervical cancer which has spread to your ovaries, or have 2 primary cancers-cervical and ovarian. If cervical cancer has spread, a radical hysterectomy is not normally an option- because surgery can make it too risky to operate, because of the risk of the cancer spreading further.
I haven’t myself had both cancers at the same time, but have had my ovaries removed as part of a much larger surgery for recurrent cervical cancer, so I do appreciate how worrying this is for you.
A radical hysterectomy is major surgery, so I hope that your doctors will have a discussion with you to explain everything before any surgery is done. The main thing to be determined is which cancer is the primary before proceeding with treatment or surgery. You should have had this discussion by now, so are you able let us know how you are getting on and what decision has been made?

Hi, sorry for the delay in responding. A lot been going on. In the end I spent 10 days in hospital having ascites drained. I was going to be having a radical hysterectomy whilst I was in but the surgeons saw clots in my lungs on a CT scan so everything is now delayed. I’m home now and I can feel the ascites developing again already.
My understanding is that the cervical and ovarian cancers are both primary which I’m hoping is positive. I’m just trying to stay positive until my operation which is now mid-July.
Does anyone have any tips for keeping the ascites at bay as long as possible?
thanks
