Hi all,
Have recently been diagnosed with low grade (1c) ovarian cancer. I've had a full hysterectomy 5 weeks ago and now waiting to start chemo in a few weeks. All being well with a few other tests I should just be having carboplatin every three weeks or so for 6 treatments.
Just wondering what to expect from the chemo i.e.do the side effects tend to get worse with each course of treatment or is it really just pot luck/down to each individual how it affects you?
Thanks
Hi Steg,
Welcome to the chat group, and glad to hear you’ve made it through the first hurdle - surgery.
My OC was grade 2b. I had my surgery in December 2020 and chemo January to May 2021. Mine was Carboplatin and Paclitaxel combined, but if you can have Carboplatin only that should at least save you the side-effects of losing your hair (which I avoided by using a cold cap) and numbness in your fingers/toes (which I still have).
The main side-effects of Carboplatin seem to be fatigue, and nausea. The anti-sickness meds are very effective for the nausea though and, if like me you still get it from time to time, ginger tea and ginger biscuits work wonders.
I did experience a bit of build up in the symptoms with each cycle but it was still do-able. Just have to stay focussed on the end goal and picture the chemo doing it’s job killing off any remaining nasties.
All the best for your chemo, and for the future,
love Bx
Hi B
Thanks for the reply. Did the nausea and fatigue just last a few days after the treatment or was it continuous throughout?
We were hoping to go away for a few days the week after my first chemo session, as we had to cancel our camping trip in July due to my surgery, but not sure if am being a bit to hopeful/naive about how I will feel!!
Hope your side affects ease off soon
Hi Steg,
I found days 2-4 after treatment were the worst, but not sure if that’s the same for everyone or if it varies.
Hope you’re feeling well enough to get your break away - think we’ve all been in need of that this year.
Love Bx
