Hi all,

Im new to this group. My mum was diagnosed with stage 3c advanced ovarian cancer last month, and we were told she would only have a short few months to live. However there was the option to try some chemotherapy with the view of stopping the spread of the cancer and to try and reduce the size of both tumours on the left and right ovaries and to facilitate  a de bulking surgery which could potentially make her very ill. Due to some cognitive decline the consultant is concerned that this could dramatically affect her quality of life and make her extremely ill. It’s probably been the worst month of my life and am extremely anxious about her starting carboplatin chemotherapy as I have heard about the most horrific side effects but realistically there is no other choice and this was her decision. We had awful option number 1 or awful option 2, what are we supposed to do?

if anyone has any tips or suggestions as to how I could help my mum and my poor dad I would be so grateful.

Thank you, Mand

  • Hi, I had a hysterectomy for womb cancer plus high grade serous in one fallopian tube.  I had carboplatin and pacletaxol and it was certainly doabl, this was when I was 70. I had a recurrence of the high grade cancer in 2020 mso stage 4 and I have had carboplatin/gemsar at 75years this again was very doable, and I am now taking a maintenance drug /parp inhibitor to try and hold the cancer back.

I hope your mum  can get treatment, otherwise perhaps you could seek a second opinion somewhere else. Different oncologists gave different views,so please do not give up hope.Take care. Georgette x

  • My mum was diagnosed with ovarian cancer stage 3C on 22nd Dec, after 3 biopsies and eventually a large operation to remove one large area and then the diagnoses. She started her first chemo last Monday and has been sick ever since. I have moved in with her and feel pretty useless. She has an obstruction too. Her treatment plan is 3 bouts of chemo and the assess, if no shrinkage another 3 bouts. Just taking one day at a time and making her feel comfortable ! Good luck with you snd your mum xx

  • Hello Mand,

im sorry to hear about your mum, and I fully understand how anxious you must feel. My mum was diagnosed with stage 3c cancer 4 years ago and was given weeks to live.

she responded really well to the paclitaxel and carboplatin, and after her 3rd cycle she had surgery and then resumed her final 3 cycles.

unfortunately 4 years later, the cancer has returned and spread to her lungs, so she has started another 6 cycles of carboplatin and again  she is responding well.

she will really benefit from your support, I hope her treatment goes well. There are drugs to deal with side effects, but unfortunately hair loss can’t be controlled.

Take care of each other and stay safe. Best wishes Sandra x

  • Hi, my mum was diagnosed last August with 3c advanced ovarian - she is on to her 5th chemo on Monday on same as your mum, she has had a couple of days of sickness, lots of fatigue but coped so much better than I had dreaded and oncologist is pleased with progress.

We are now at the option of surgery undecided as of yet ( and very confused).   I hope she doesnt have horrible side effects but my mum was not terrible at all, think they are stronger than us daughters

    xxx

  • Sorry i meant to also say she is 85 xx
