I am 69. In Spring 2023, after a new tumour showed up on my back, under my right shoulder blade, I went to see my GP who sent me for various scans and XRs. Same time I complained about new back pains that started in pandemic, pains in legs, odd difficulty walking, all after slouching and slobbing at home during lockdowns..
The tumour turned up to be benign but while scanning, something called Schwannoma was discovered in my chest wall, between my right lung and ribs. Since than I had whole series of appointments and scans regarding it, including with a chest surgeon who is very keen to get it out.
I was explained that Schwannomas are rarely malignant, grow slowly, but leaving them in endanger neighbouring organs, ie lung.
Surgery is about getting in and shaving bunch of nerves where this tiny thing is, and recovery is about pain management. But it might happen that pain will never stop..
My complains about my spine that turns and twists and bends got lost in all this. Since I walk with more and more difficulty, and my whole body hurts, and no one was telling me why, I arranged a private consultation over a phone with an Orthopaedic surgeon...
He only saw my XRs. His verdict, I need spine fusion! He sent me close ups to show why.
Top section of my spine slides from the bottom one, already by ca one third...
And no one noticed?!?
And they want me to agree to a chest surgery now?!?
I said NO.
Surgeon said it might hurt.
I asked for monitoring. There'll be periodic CTs.
I asked to be referred for spinal fusion, instead.
Now I have to wait.
..and get on head&neck people to do something about that swelling I have in my face and neck since December last year.. No tumour, there, thank god, but swollen still... Why?!?!
Anyone here have Schwannoma in their chest wall? ...? How is that developing..? Can it affect other, more distant, parts...?
Thanks for reading!
Best,
Hi orrla and welcome across to this corner of the community and I am sorry to hear about the challenges you are having.
I have a completely different cancer but let’s look for any group members with experience with this to pick up on your post.
I put Schwannoma into the search tool near the top and found a few discussions where it is mentioned so do have a look.
