I have a sore throat leading I expect to a cold. Should I contact GP because I have Non Hodgkin lymphoma

  • Personally I wouldn't bother, I have WM and also I am recovering after chemo, radio and surgery for head and neck cancer. My NHL has been ongoing for 5 years now and I've survived lots of colds and other ailments. I think it's an individual thing. If you're gp is like ours it will take 2 weeks to get an appointment, I'd suggest stocking up on cold and flu remedies, paracetamol and ibuprofen and some aspirin if your temperature elevates. All the best.

  • Thanks, I think you're right. I'm at the start of the illness and not sure whether to act as you would in the past or whether the body is no longer capable of dealing with a cold. Twice in the last 3 years I ended up in hospital with pneumonia and thought oh it's just a cold

  • Hi  and I see it’s your first post so a very warm welcome to the Community although.

I am Mike and I help out around our Lymphoma groups.

I was diagnosed way back in 1999 at 43 with my first incurable but treatable type of NHL eventually reaching Stage 4a in late 2013 when a second, very rare was then presenting so with 26 years under my belt I most definitely appreciate the challenges of this journey rather well…….

If you are on treatment and you have a high temperature then you call it into your hospital team. If you are on Active Monitoring or post treatment this is life….. keep hydrated and follow normal cold treatments….. but if you do develop a temperature you consult your GP…… and or your team.

I am 11 years out from treatment and I had a bad cold over the past 2 weeks…… it’s life.
