My husband has recently been diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma. We are still awaiting haematology appointment.
the lump in his neck has rapidly increased in size and is putting terrible pressure on his throat. He’s dosed up on painkillers but I wondered if anyone had any suggestions of how to ease the discomfort or anything that helped. He’s also really struggling to swallow food and has been prescribed nutritional shakes. Does anyone have any foods that are easy to swallow. Thankfully he likes soup but as a foodie I’d like to give him something he may enjoy. Thanks
Hi Angie3 and a warm welcome to this corner of the Community although I am sorry to hear about your husbands diagnosis and the problems he is having. I am Mike and I help out around our various Lymphoma groups.
I was diagnosed way back in 1999 at 43 with a rare, incurable but treatable type of Low-grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma eventually reaching Stage 4a in late 2013 so although my Lymphoma ‘type’ may be different I do appreciate the challenges of this journey rather well.
You can see my story through the link at the bottom of my post but in late 2013 my condition became very aggressive and I was in exactly the same position as your husband while I was waiting to see Heamatology.
I was also living on soups and that was it…. and very strong pain meds….. the only way the swelling can go down is through treatment, steroids helped a little but once chemo started the difference was amazing.
I would be constantly pushing for this appointment. How progress was made for me was I called my GP surgery to highlight the appointment had not come in and the pain was getting worse…… my GP called me and told me to come down to the surgery and he sat on the phone until he talked with one of the Haematologist…… it turned out that I had missed my appointment by a week as the appointment letter had not arrived….. I was told to be at Haematology first thing the next morning and treatment started from there.
Thank you for your response. His appointment is middle of next week. I will continue to chase up pet scan and bone marrow biopsy. Hopefully next week will bring answers.
When I eventually did see the Haematologist I still had to have another scan and core biopsy but treatment did start rather quickly….. do get back to us once you know more ((hugs))
So sorry to hear this. In rare cases, where bodily function is limited by the tumours, doctor "may" choose some localized radiation or even surgery in emergencies. That is rare, however. Some of the swelling is inflammation and so ice packs might help. I would ring up and ask if ibuprofen or similar non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs might help. They are only a bridge to more effective treatment.
