Hi, I'm new to the group and would like to hear from others who have b-cell non hodgkins lymphoma. My mother is 78 years old and has recently been diagnosed. She has had a ct scan and doesn't require any treatment but I would like to know how to manage her symptoms as she is experiencing a lot of hot flashes, sometimes severe. The gp prescribed citalopram and then mirtrazpine. She felt less anxious on them but the hot flashes weren't too bad. The gp has now swapped her to fluoxetine. She's been taking them for about a week and she doesn't feel good at all. The hot flushes were extreme through the night, she feels sick, has a metallic taste in her mouth and feels like she's been poisoned. Is anyone experiencing this and how do you manage the symptoms? Any advice would be appreciated please. I just want to make mum feel more comfortable

  • Hi  and welcome to our little corner of the Community and sorry to hear about your mum and the problems she is having.

Over my many years I have not experienced hot flushes so let’s see if any of the others can help.

I can say that I did have various reactions to some drugs that I were given so had to contact my team and we made changes as we went through treatment.

There are lots of anti-sickness meds, so do make sure her team are fully aware of all on going problems. The metallic taste is horrible, I found fresh pineapple and melon helped a lot, some suck on toffees or hard boiled sweets.

I do hope that things will settle down soon for her.

Thanks for your reply. The doctor has prescribed her with a different medication today so hopefully it will help Pray

  • Hi, good to hear that some progress has been made. The Lymphoma journey is indeed full of twists and turns.

I have been on my treatment journey for over 21 years now so developed the understanding that we had to expect the unexpected. When ‘new’ challenges came along we looked for advice but as time went on we developed the knowledge base to deal with most of the challenges and this helped reduce the stress and worry.

Wishing your mum, you and the family as good a Christmas as restrictions allow and let’s look for 2021 to bring health and a positive way forward during these crazy times.
