Hi im new to all this and havent been involved in any support groups before. I was diagnosed with marginal zone lymphoma just over a year ago. They say its barely there and i dont need treatment unless it progresses, if it ever does. Although i am thankful as if lt could have been a lot worse, it has affected me mentally and i am struggling. Its the not knowing and waiting. They say it is unusual for someone of my age to have it without a trigger such as a virus and is usually seen in patients over 60 and a lot never usually need treatment. Im in my early 30's. I was living in australia when tests began, i obviously cane home to be with family so my life was turned upside down in more areas than 1.
  • Hi and welcome to this corner of the Community.

It’s a complete battle between the ears getting your head round having a blood cancer but not needing treatment. There are over 60 types some are very aggressive and need treated immediately but some just stay with you for a long long time and don’t need treatment.

Back in 1999 when I was 44ish I was diagnosed with a rare skin NHL and I was told “Mike this in incurable but treatable but unfortunately you will never be in remission - you need to think like this is a chronic illness like diabetes.....” and for 14 years that was it - skin treatments like bad Psoriasis but it did become aggressive (long story) but fast forward to September 2016 I was told I was in remission and my skin is perfect - RESULT....... hit my name to see my long story.

There are others with the same condition so let’s look for them to pick up on your post.

The challenge is not to over think this. I found out some ‘famous’ people had exactly the same condition as me and you would never have known and lived long, happy and very successful lives.

We are here to walk this with you and to answer any questions you have ((hugs))

    Hi  Thehighlander,

Wow you lived with it for 14 years. How did you learn to cope? Thats amazing to hear.

I understand i am one of the "lucky" ones and it could have been a lot worse. And I have come to terms with it amd I dont mope about it but I feel like im on a rollercoaster. Ill pick myself up then ill crumble again. I just need to get my act together.

Thank you for taking the time to reply to me.

  • Hi Becky, I took the advice of my GP and Consultant and did see it as a chronic illness.

I have friends who have Diabetes, MS and Parkinson’s and I was in a much more healthy state then them and even when things became more challenging the treatments did the job.

I am now 4 1/2 years in remission and No Evident Disease..... my friend with Diabetes will always have Diabetes and the ones with MS and Parkinson’s have progressively deteriorated over the 20+ years.

Love life - Live life..... it’s all about prospective ((hugs))
