Steroids and R-CHOP

Hi,

Can anyone advise please. I've recently completed my 2nd cycle of R-chop and had steroids from day 2 to 5 as per protocol. Initially I felt better when I'd taken steroids but didn't seem to get same effect this time. I know why they are used and I have a large mass on my liver and spleen (NHL Stage 4 and follicular stage 3B) which they help reduce, but the first time they titrated my dosage down from 15 to 10, 5 etc, whereas, I just got 15 to take daily then stopped.

I don't really understand why the steroids just stop so suddenly? Perhaps I'm not asking enough about my treatment and I do know that chemo can have a cumulative affect. I hope someone can advise, if indeed, I'm making sense?

  • Hi again . Some folks do have changes during treatment especially to steroids so as you say, do talk with your team to understand this better.

I had a slightly different treatment and my steroid dosage was the same for all 6 cycles, they were full on doses and it was cold turkey coming off them.

I did ask my team about this, they said it was due to the size of my mass so the treatment had to keep the pressure of the reduction of the mass.

Treatment effects is indeed cumulative so for some it can get more challenging as the cycles go in but once completed the recover slowly kicks in.

  • Thanks for that. I appreciate your help

  • Really you only have to taper steroids if you've been on them for a longer time, three weeks or so. For just five days there's no need to taper as the body can cope! I had the same higher grade lymphoma as you. Now I'm back to just the follicular and hoping it stays away for a good long time.
