one this for nothing and it reaches nobody
Hi Betterdays and a warm welcome to this corner of the Community although I am sorry to see you joining us and hear about your journey.
I am Mike and I help out around our various Blood Cancer groups. I don’t have Myeloma but for some context I was diagnosed way back in 1999 at 43 with a very rare (8 in a million) incurable but treatable type T-Cell Low-Grade Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma……. eventually reaching Stage 4a in late 2013 when a second, also rare fast growing type of T-Cell High-Grade Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma was presenting….. so although my Blood Cancer ‘type’ is different I most definitely appreciate the challenges of this journey rather well……. More so as I have had 2 Allo (donor) Stem Cell Transplants (June 2014 then Oct 2015)….. and my recovery took a good 2 years.
A holiday sounds amazing but you may fInd it challenging getting affordable Travel Insurance as at times the price quoted could be higher than the cost of the holiday and some people do find that no Insurance is being offered.
I personally had to be 2 years in remission from my last SCT and not on any cancer related treatments for my type of incurable blood cancer before I could get any price (and that was with my consultant saying I was clear to fly a good 18 months before) but these decisions are often all down to cancer types, treatment, prognosis and the resulting risk factor put on by the insurers risk assessment - I am very open to serious infections due to a reduced immune system so this was seen as a high risk factor for insurers….. and I could never find a company that would rule out my Lymphoma until I was 5 years post treatment.
Comparison sites tend to use the same algorithms so getting a clear price can be difficult and it’s not that unusual to be turned down or told to call the insurers.
It is actually more effective to call a few insurers directly as this means that you have answered all the questions correctly and in doing this a suitable policy can be offered and price given.
Full disclosure is always advisable as in the event of you developing any issues this can reduce the risk of an insurance companies wriggling out from paying out.
Our latest insurance was through PayingTooMuch, the price was ok but I can’t comment about how good they would be in the event of a claim as we did not need to do this.

I do hope you can get cover.
Always around to help more or just to chat.
Hi Betterdays, Kevin here, AKA Vespa 13 months post stem cell and still with a few mobility issues due to the hip, but re MM i am in Remission still, i think a holiday is a great thing, my wife and i are going to try a 5 day break in the UK first no more than 2 hours away from home with a dog and short walk, where previously i would have written long walks and the pub ! i still get pain, do you suffer from any Neuropathy at all? i want to go to Australia, i have two sons and a grand son there, and have not been for 3 years now missing one sons wedding due to ongoing treatment for the MM pre Stem cell, but i am still " hoping !" i can help at all with insurance, but i see Thehighlander Mike has given some pointers, i just wanted to respond to make sure you know your voice is heard best wishes and hope you get the holiday you deserve Kevin
