I have MGUS, and I would really appreciate it if someone could tell me if I should be self isolating.  I have a hospital appointment on 7the April to discuss my latest hip xray that shows a shadow. Thank you.

  • Hi Debbie,

Welcome to this corner of the forum, although I’m sorry for the reasons you have to post. I think this is a really uncertain time and a lot of people, including myself, are not entirely certain how to respond.

I am waiting for my medical team to get back to me, but I think they are likely to say all myeloma patients, regardless of stage or treatment are higher risk, since the cancer is in plasma cells, which create antibodies, so by definition something has gone wrong with that important infection fighting process.

I am not a medical expert, but from what little I know about MGUS, it relates to excess proteins in the blood. I’m sure there’s still things to learn about how and why MGUS turns into myeloma, but it only happens for a small % of people, so I’m thinking there is not an absolute connection. Therefore, it’s entirely possible the advice for myeloma patients does not apply in MGUS. Do you have a medical team that monitors you and could you check with them re:what they think?

    Wishing you all the best

    Greg
