My paraprotein went from 44 to 64 haven't had results back from yesterday so unsure if gone up or down. Dr suggested looking at starting treatment as my hemoglobin had dropped to in the 80s and could explain tiredness. After a year that started with breast cancer (chemo Jan-May) radiotherapy 20 session all June I would have liked the myeloma to take a back seat. All year, felt healthy even through chemo and radiotherapy but last week had horrible chesty cough and tired which Dr said be due to hemoglobin drop. She said pp rise on its own not enough to start treatment but as I felt so 'rough' at time of appointment I sort of agreed to start treatment. Steriods, velcade, thalidomide and she mentioned something about moving bone marrow and going back after treatment (she said that much my head was spinning. Now I've had time to have a good think sure would it not be best to focus on upping my red blood cells? I have said I'm very wary of putting my body through chemo twice in a year but did say I would only consider a reduced dose. I would appreciate some views here.
Hi Pb,
Really sorry to read your update. I am by no means a medical expert, so please take everything I write with a pinch of salt. I think the problem you’ll have with trying to up the red blood cells without tackling the dodgy plasma cells, is that the dodgy plasma cells will continue to crowd out the red blood cells and you’ll probably find the red blood cells won’t improve. I was always told it was better to get on top of the myeloma first and then everything will improve as a result.
But I am by no means an expert, and your team shouldn’t mind you going back to them to clarify a few things before you decide what to do. I certainly did that quite a few times and they didn’t seem to mind.
Here’s hoping you can get some answers as to the best way forward soon.
Greg
