Hi there, my mum was diagnosed with stage 3 multiple myeloma 3 weeks ago. She is still in hospital now and is in terrible pain to the point where they almost sedate her to give her respite. The bone pain is now in her back, sternam and skull. They have reviewed her pain relief daily and she's also started chemo. She looks so so poorly and her spine and has now hunched.
When you read about myeloma it's all very positive regarding pain management, living a normal life etc but I can't see this when I look at my mum. The myeloma specialist said she's a mystery and they don't know why she's in so much pain 24/7. Has anyone else had experience with myeloma like this?
Thanks for reading.
Dear southcheshire, it’s not unusual for there to be bone involvement when a patient is diagnosed with multiple myeloma and it varies in degree between patients. When the chemotherapy starts to kick in properly the pain should decrease a great deal. Sternum pain and pain in the vertebrae is not a pleasant experience and does require good pain relief. Treatments for multiple myeloma are the best they have ever been, so although things are difficult at the moment hang on in there, it will get better. Your mum is at the start of a long journey which will have many twists and turns but there is lots to be hopeful about and will need lots of support until things are stabilised.
