Hello,

‘I’ve suffered from anemia for years and lately my doctor ran a series of blood test to find the cause.  Now I’m being told I need a bone marrow biopsy because my test came back abnormal.  I’m wondering if there is a chance I could be misdiagnosed because I have zero pain.  I know my B12 is low and I’m wondering and hoping it could be something else.  Is it possible the blood test alone can show that I have myeloma...and the biopsy is just to confirm? I have so many questions.  My doctor tells me it’s nit an urgent matter he just needs to run test.  Meanwhile I have 2 weeks of worrying and probably another 2-3 weeks waiting for the results.  If anyone has been diagnosed with this, what are treatment options? Thank you.

  • Hi Tonya,

Welcome to the forum, although I’m really sorry for the reasons you have had to post. Has your doctor told you that they suspect myeloma? I think they can suspect it from blood tests, but a biopsy is done to confirm it. I am really hoping that it isn’t myeloma, but if it is, I hope you find some assurance for the fact that treatments are developing all the time. Depending on your age, fitness and other health concerns, the standard of treatment is a regime which contains chemo, steroids and a proteasome inhibitor which specifically targets the myeloma cells, in,preparation for a stem cell transplant, with hopefully a view to putting you in remission for a long time. I’ve been in remission for 4 years now so I hope this gives you some comfort that the treatment can be really successful.
