20 year old living with melanoma

I was diagnosed with melanoma last year at 19 with melanoma in my leg. ( never used a sunbed and always been cautious in the sun) Since then I have had 9 other moles removed, all pre cancerous. I’ve since been told to stay out of the sun completely. I’m currently struggling with anxiousness revolving around “when is the next one going to come, which one’s going to a bad one again?” feelings. Can anyone relate, or going through the same thing?

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to our corner of the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I was diagnosed with melanoma 10 years ago, but I can still remember how difficult it felt at the time to know that I now needed to either avoid spending time in the sun or covering up if I went outside. However, I did adapt and now think nothing of grabbing my hat before going out and wearing long sleeved tops and trousers.
I have had a few other moles removed since the original melanoma but thankfully they've all come back benign. I don't think there's anyone here who doesn't worry that they might get another melanoma but hopefully you'll find with time that you can push the worry to the back of your mind and it doesn't become all consuming. Someone once said to me that "worry doesn't change anything but it does ruin the present" and I try to remember that if I'm having a bad day.

It would be great if you could put something about your diagnosis and treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
