Hi, I’m new to the group. I’m 54 and have been diagnosed with Melanoma. Have an appointment with plastics to discuss onward actions.
My husband also has a biopsy this week. We couldn’t write that both of us are going through the same thing.
we haven’t told our children or anyone.
if I talk about it it becomes real. Living in a fog and angry that I promoted great sun care, but did the sun beds when I was young - didn’t have knowledge like we do. I’ve joined here to chat and hope get some clarity. We’ve decided no holidays abroad this year - we’re scared.

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to our corner of the online community.

I'm sorry to read that both you and your husband have been diagnosed with melanoma so I can totally understand why you're feeling scared about going on holiday abroad. However, you can still go to 'sunny places' along as you follow the advice that you should have been given by your consultant.

In case you weren't given the usual leaflet then this is the advice I was given:

    1. Stay out of the sun during the strongest time of the day (11am to 3pm) between April and October inclusive in the UK and in all months of the year in any other part of the world
    2. When going outside wear long sleeved tops and trousers/skirts made from natural fibres like cotton
    3. Wear a broad brimmed hat (brim should be at least 3 inches) and sun glasses
    4. Sit in the shade and never sunbathe
    5. Any part of your body that is not covered, ie. face, neck, back of hands should have a sun protection cream of SPF 50 that is effective against both UVA and UVB rays
    6. Re-apply the sunscreen every couple of hours or immediately after swimming
    7. Never use sunbeds
    8. Don't use sunscreen instead of covering up

I must admit that I did develop vampire like tendencies the year immediately after my diagnosis, even crossing the street to avoid walking in the sun but, as time went by, I gradually relaxed but always followed the above advice.

I did tell family and friends because otherwise I thought it would be too difficult to try and make something up about why I was seeking the shade instead of sitting in the sun. However, when and who you tell is completely up to you.

I hope this helps and, if you want to read about my 'journey' with melanoma just click on my username.

  • Hi, Anne,

thank you so much for replaying and the great advice. Isn’t it ironic that I have followed all of the guidelines for sun, apart from when I was younger as we didn’t have the knowledge that we do now. Even my children come back from holiday white!
I will definitely read your story. Thank you and have a great day.
